London-based photographer Philip Gatward has a unique approach to his fine art photography.
Removing all extraneous matter from his photo shoots, Gatward presents the subject against a bare black or grey background, and uses a laser-like camera focus to allow the eye to settle on what occupies the frame. From picking out the individual hairs on a dog's coat to identifying myriad shades of colour in flower petals, Gatward highlights the minuscule beauty of what nature has produced.
In his series of Dahlias, Gatward both elevates and humbles this sensational flower. Presenting a single stem against a grey background, each variety of Dahlia is like a starburst of colour, texture, and form. Together, they form an incredible rainbow.
